Community involvement

Development projects throughout the world are realising the importance of meaningful community involvement in both the design and management of projects. This web site is designed as a resource for people who want to know more about how to do it, why it needs to be done (and if you need it, how we can help)

Participatory Learning and Action
Can be described as a group of approaches or methods and behaviours that enable community members to analyse issues affecting them. This helps them to plan what action to take and to monitor and evaluate the results. PLA does this through the use of a large number of fun and visually exciting methods.

Citizen's Juries

Are an attempt to allow, usually, randomly selected citizens the opportunity to debate an issue important to them. Their debate is informed by their own experiences and those of a series of 'witnesses' who have different perspectives on the issue. The citizens then make recommendations.

Planning for Real

Was designed by the Neighbourhood Initiatives Foundation and is used widely in the UK. Residents are invited to express their desires through a series of cards laid on to a full scale plan of their area.
Children and young people
Participation and consultation with adults is common place. However the voice of young people is still seldom heard despite the large number of approaches available.
